Temporary Strengthening Technique of Marble Columns with Steel Wires and Wood Spars
2014
Granite, marble and heavy stone columns have been used in the architects from all the ages to answer to both aesthetical and structural requirements in ancient churches and historical buildings. Such materials offer great visual impact and have mechanical properties that allow their use in construction and to obtain bright and slender structures. Marble is a very high strength but brittle material. It often occur that marble or granite columns of historical building are cracked along their height due to external actions and the risk of buckling occurs. Because this kind of failure is sudden and very brittle in stone and rocks, an immediate strengthening of the columns is needed. Among e tem…
Effect of steel collars on the seismic behaviour of granite and heavy stone columns
2013
Granite and heavy stone circular columns could be often find in the cultural heritage among ancient churches and historical buildings in all the Mediterranean area. Their good strength properties allowed to carry great load values, while their bright colours and aesthetical characteristics have been used by a lot of ancient architects to achieve structural solutions with great visual impact. Even if such materials have great compressive strength values, the environmental effects, such as long term effects and thermal loads, could damage the structural members, by cracking them. In this way the slenderness of the column increases, and the presence of an imposed ground motion could be very da…
Brick Masonry Columns Externally Wrapped with Steel Wires under Concentric and Eccentric Loads
2017
This paper discusses an experimental investigation of clay brick columns that are externally strengthened by steel wire collars wrapping the horizontal mortar joints. The study aims to prove the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening technique and detect the efficiency of different numbers of steel collars. Additionally, the effect of eccentric loading is investigated. This paper proves that an analytical expression available in the previous literature can be modified to provide the strength of the equivalent homogeneous cross section in simple compression. To this aim, the biaxial strength domain of the bricks is modified to account for the lateral pressure exerted by the steel collar…
Dynamic behaviour of cracked granite and marble columns retrofitted with steel collars
2014
Marble and heavy stone columns are widely diffused in ancient churches and historical buildings in all the Mediterranean area. Their good mechanical properties allowed carrying great load values, while their bright colours and aesthetical characteristics have been used by a lot of ancient architects to achieve structural solutions with great visual impact. Despite their good compressive strength, marble columns could be damaged from environmental effects (e.g. longterm effects or thermal loads), which could crack the structural members. In this way, the slenderness of the column increases drastically and the presence of an imposed ground shaking could be critical, since the column will be m…
